GI

Goal involvements combine a player's goals and assists into a single count of direct attacking output.

Why it matters. It is the quickest read on what a player has actually produced at the sharp end, before you check whether the underlying numbers support it.

Goals plus assists, nothing else

Goal involvements adds a player's goals to their assists, producing a single count of direct attacking output. Every goal counts, penalties included: a converted spot kick is worth exactly the same as a strike from open play.

Penalties skew the picture for players who take them regularly, so a total built partly on scored penalties is not automatically a sign of open-play quality. To judge that separately, compare against non-penalty expected goals instead, which strips penalties out entirely.

Assists are counted the same way: the pass has to lead directly to a goal, nothing more. There is no adjustment for how difficult the pass was or how well it was struck. Goal involvements records what happened, not how it happened.

The arithmetic is deliberately simple. A forward with 14 goals and 6 assists this season has a goal involvements total of 20, full stop. There is no weighting for the standard of the opposition, the state of the match, or the run of games the total was built across.

Three scenarios where the raw number misleads

The penalty-heavy total. A forward on a run of converted penalties can post a goal involvements total well ahead of their usual level without a single extra chance created from open play. The total is accurate. The trend it implies is not.

A big total, unsupported. A player racks up a strong goal involvements count while their expected goal involvements sits well below it. That gap is a warning: output has outrun the quality of the chances behind it, and the total is more likely to fall than climb.

Modest total, strong underlying numbers. A player with an ordinary goal involvements count but a notably higher xGI has been reaching good positions without the end product arriving yet. That gap tends to close upwards rather than the output simply stalling.

Check it against xGI before trusting it

Goal involvements is the fastest headline number for judging attacking output, and the first one worth checking. It is also the least adjusted: no correction for chance quality, no separation of penalties, no weighting for difficulty.

Read it alongside xGI every time. A large gap in either direction, goals well above the expected number or well below it, is the signal worth acting on. The raw total on its own only tells you what already happened.

Common misreadings

"A high GI total means the underlying play is strong." Not necessarily. It means the outcomes have been strong. Whether the process behind them supports it is a separate question, answered by checking xGI.

"GI already accounts for chance quality." It does not, deliberately. It is a count of results, not a judgement on how good those results were likely to be. That judgement belongs to xGI.

"Two players with the same GI total are equally productive." Only in volume. One total built from 12 low-value chances and another from 12 high-value ones look identical here and completely different once xGI is brought in.
