Goal difference versus expected is expected goal difference minus actual goal difference, so a positive figure means the underlying play is better than the goals suggest.

Built from one subtraction, in goals rather than points
Goal difference versus expected is expected goal difference minus actual goal difference. A positive figure means the underlying chance quality, for and against, is better than the goals column shows. A negative figure means the goals have flattered the performances behind them.
Like points versus expected, this runs expected minus actual, the opposite convention to the player-level deltas on this site such as xG difference, which run actual minus expected. The table asks what the performances deserved. Player pages ask what a player actually did against that same baseline.
When the goals column and the points column tell different stories
The straightforward case. A team's ΔGD and ΔPts both run positive by a wide margin. Their goals have undersold their chance quality, and that shortfall has cost them results too. This is the strongest possible version of an unlucky team: the story agrees at both levels.
The team where the two disagree. A side carries a large positive ΔGD but a ΔPts close to zero. Their finishing and defending have genuinely underperformed the underlying goal expectation, yet it has barely cost them points. That happens when the missing goals would have arrived in matches already decided. A 3-0 win that the model rates as a 4-0 or 5-0 win still banks three points either way. The goal difference is real. The points impact of it is not.
The reverse disagreement. A team's ΔGD sits near zero while ΔPts runs strongly positive. Goals for and against have landed roughly where expected in aggregate, but they have arrived at the wrong moments: a stoppage-time equaliser conceded, a late winner missed by inches. The story here is about timing within matches, not about overall chance quality.
The case is strongest when both agree
ΔGD does not replace ΔPts. It checks it. A positive ΔPts backed by a positive ΔGD means two independent readings of the same season agree. One is in the table's own currency, the other in raw chance quality, and both point the same direction. That alignment is a far stronger case for an approaching correction than either number would make alone.
When the two pull apart, the explanation is almost always about when goals arrive relative to the scoreline, not about whether the underlying football is good or bad. A team's performances can be exactly as strong as their expected numbers claim while the goals still cluster into results that do not reflect it evenly.
Where the read goes wrong
Treating a large gap in one delta as proof on its own. A big ΔGD with a flat ΔPts, or the reverse, is a weaker signal than either would be if both moved together. Read a lone delta as a partial clue, not a verdict.
Assuming the two must always move in step. They measure different things by design. Goals and points diverge whenever a match's margin does not matter to its result, which happens often enough that disagreement between the two deltas is normal, not a data error.
